NVQ
The NVQ in Transporting Passengers in Taxi and Private Hire will run along side the BTEC course and will give the driver's under pinning knowledge of the industry The NVQ will be mapped around the units in the BETC course along with 2 practical assessments.
The Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) industry is essential to an integrated transport System. It is the only form of transport that is door to door and it provides an important Service for many disabled persons. The industry is not small it contributes over £2.8bn to the UK economy and has 256, 000 licensed drivers in England and Wales. In addition, it is often the first contact for tourists and visitors and therefore drivers are the ambassadors to their local region.

But unlike drivers in other forms of passenger transport, taxi and PHV drivers have generally not had access to skills development, or the opportunity of obtaining recognition for their skills. However, that is changing. GoSkills (the Sector Skills Council for Passenger Transport) has, with the support of the industry developed national occupational standards for skills development, and there are now several national Level 2 qualifications available for taxi/PHV drivers. A number of local authorities have already made the qualifications available to their taxi/PHV drivers, including Bournemouth, Poole, Barnstable, Nottingham, Birmingham, Sandwell, Mersey Travel and Eastleigh to name a few.

The NVQ and BTEC are recognised qualifications, Beacon taxis are proud to provide a reliable and trustworthy service with qualified drivers.

Get Safe Campaign

Stark warning is being sent to taxi users across Dudley borough to ensure they pre-book private hire vehicles.

Taxi users are reminded it is illegal for a private hire vehicle to carry passengers if the journey has not been pre-booked. If it is not pre-booked it will mean the vehicle is not insured.

Sedgley-based private hire vehicle firm, Beacon Taxis, is leading the way among companies across the borough. Beacon is currently running a leaflet campaign to make their customers aware of the need to pre-book their vehicles. They are reminding their customers that any driver who picks up customers without a booking is acting alone and is not working on behalf of Beacon Taxis and will not be insured.

Any driver of a private hire vehicle caught taking customers without a booking could end up before the courts. On conviction they could receive fines for plying for hire and driving without insurance plus up to eight penalty points. All these drivers would then be required to appear before Dudley Council's taxis committee for a review of their licences, which could result in suspension or revocation.
Councillor Doreen Ameson, chair of the taxis committee, said:
"I welcome Beacon Taxis stance on this issue and hope other firms across the borough will follow suit. It is important we get the message across to the public that private hire vehicles are not hackney carriages and you must pre-book them."

Shazada Saleem, of Beacon Taxis, said:
"We are only too pleased to work with Dudley Council on this and hope that together we are able to make the public aware of the risks of getting into a private hire vehicle that is not booked. In such cases the vehicle will be uninsured during a journey that has not been correctly booked, therefore the driver will be acting alone and not behalf of the taxi company."
